CRITICAL LITERACY
Critical literacy is that literacy embedded in all other literacy that allows the students to think critically, creatively and develop a deeper understanding of their reading and learning. It is a form of literacy used to engage the learner to seek knowledge beyond the surface to make informed and logical judgments. Critical literacy takes learners beyond developing basic literacy skills such as decoding, predicting, and summarizing. It makes them to become critical consumers of the information they receive. To be a successful and participating citizen, teachers must provide students with activities to develop critical thinking skills and an in-depth understanding of reading, learning, and other social and cultural phenomena. When teachers ask questions such as; how would this be different if…? What is the author’s intention? It helps students think outside the box.
